Each manufacturer uses a different stiffness index. The lack of an industry-wide standard has led to brands using different scales. We and others use a standard 1-10 scale, while others go beyond using a 12, 13, and even 15. It doesn’t mean that 15 from one brand is stiffer than 10 from another. The scale is just different. We recommend that competitive or serious recreational cyclists aim for the stiffest shoe their budget allows. Casual riders benefit from a more comfortable shoe with less rigidity.
